December 8th from 7:00 PM – 8:30 PM

Just for one performance only, Jean Cocteau Cinema and Nasus Media present the Santa Fe premiere of Susan Lieu’s autobiographical solo show, 140 LBS: HOW BEAUTY KILLED MY MOTHER. Award-winning playwright and activist Susan Lieu brings to light the tragic story of her mother’s unexpected death.

Susan uncovers the painful truth of her mother, herself, and the impossible ideal of Vietnamese feminine beauty.  Susan was 11 years old when her mother died of plastic surgery malpractice in San Francisco. 18 years and two Ivy League degrees later, she’s finally ready to avenge her mother’s death.

After sold-out premieres in Seattle and San Francisco, Susan Lieu is embarking on a national tour October-December 2019 with her solo theatrical dramedy, 140 LBS: HOW BEAUTY KILLED MY MOTHER.  140 LBS is the true story of how Lieu’s Vietnamese refugee mother died from plastic surgery malpractice and her search to find the man responsible for her death. Lieu plays an astounding 11 characters in a quick 75 minutes.  The performance weaves together several through-lines: the multi-generational immigrant experience; body insecurity and shame; repression and subsequent examination of personal loss; lack of accountability in the medical system; Vietnamese folkloric practice of spirit channeling.

The San Francisco Chronicle calls it “fascinating, touching, upsetting, poignant, startling, affecting, engrossing, emotional, informative and, more than anything, humane.” Lieu has been featured on NPR, KING5 News, ABC7 News, The Seattle Times, and The Seattle Channel, among other publications.

A heartfelt mother-daughter story, the live performance takes on a whole new meaning as Susan will be entering her second trimester of pregnancy on her tour.  Susan has performed 140 LBS to over 3000 people and was the featured Seattle storyteller for The Moth Mainstage in May 2019.

Susan will be making her Santa Fe premiere with George R.R. Martin’s Jean Cocteau Cinema on Sunday, December 8, 2019, at 7pm.
