A Story from Africa- Fundraiser!

We are so pleased to announce a fundraiser in support of school programs for children with special needs and disabilities in Africa! We’ll be hosting a FREE screening of “A Story from Africa”. There will be jewelry for sale made by the children from St. Ursula’s Special School in Jinja, Uganda, administered by the Sisters of Mary of Kakamega. While the screening is FREE, donations are encouraged!
“A Story from Africa” tells the story of children’s hopes and dreams for a better life through education. In 2016 and 2017, filmmaker Diane Marron visited many schools in West Kenya and Uganda. Marron visited with children, capturing their dreams through song, words, tears and their pure love and value of education as their pathway to a brighter future!
“A Story from Africa” is about the Sisters of Mary of Kakamega and the amazing work they are doing educating the children of Kenya. In 1932, the late Bishop Brandsma, a Mill Hill Missionary in the Diocese of Kakamega, set up the congregation with the help of the Ursuline Sisters from Bergen, Holland.
One of the original aims of the congregation was to foster the education of African girls and women to enhance and raise their standard of living in a society where they seemed to be marginalized by their male counterparts.
Today, the work of these sisters has expanded into different areas. They serve hospitals and dispensaries in many communities. They teach boys and girls from kindergarten through high school, children with special needs and disabilities and orphaned children. They provide safe, pleasant homes for children who would otherwise have no safe place to sleep.
Today, the congregation which began with five girls in 1932 numbers close to 500 sisters who not only administer dozens of schools in West Kenya, but also have a presence in Tanzania, Uganda, South Sudan and in the USA where they operate Otunga House in Bend, Oregon for adult foster care.
